Leading by Example - September 2021

Maura attended the State Bar of Michigan Real Property Conference virtually on July 21-23rd. These are her impressions.

There were many interesting topics discussed including:

  • The impacts of the global pandemic (how tight the job market is, what the new look of “working at the office” looks like, etc…)
  • A panel discussion on marijuana—with a lender, realtor, cannabis attorney, title company, etc.. all on the panel
  • The very hot topic of short term rentals and the local zoning issues surrounding them
  • Property tax appeals and a Q&A session that tested our knowledge on the Land Title Standards (a “must-read” for everyone in the industry).

Interestingly, in one of the presentations, they brought up a Michigan appellate case involving an option/right of first refusal that involved a prior seller of property on which we handled the closing. We actually closed the sale of the property that was at issue between that seller (the defendant in the litigation) and the buyer (the plaintiff (suing party) in the litigation). Wow!
