International Non-Binary People’s Day

International Non-Binary People's Day, which is celebrated July 14th, is for raising awareness of those who identify as non-binary and the diversity of their community.

The term non-binary describes someone who does not identify exclusively as a man or a woman. Non-binary folks may identify as being both a man and a woman or as falling completely outside these categories. Many non-binary people also identify as transgender, though not all do. Most in the non-binary community refer to themselves as they/them instead of gender pronouns of he/she.

Many also change their birth names to something that more gender neutral and stop going by their birth names. Many cultures throughout the ages have recognized a 3rd (non-binary) gender as being normal and in many cases revered and respected them.

National Disability Independence Day

On July 26, National Disability Independence Day recognizes the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) inception date. The Americans with Disabilities Act was passed in 1990.

The ADA provides protection from employment discrimination as well as better access to goods, services and communications for people with disabilities.

This law first broke down barriers individuals with disabilities faced every day. It also marked a timeline of change that soon developed. Over time, common barriers, such as narrow doors and small bathroom stalls, became accessible to wheelchairs.

Other examples include braille signs and crosswalks for the vision impaired. The changes improved mobility and safety.

Beyond structural changes, the act motivated designers to enhanced technology. Often, physical limitations restrict a person’s ability to access legal or health information. New assistive technologies make it possible to obtain the necessary information.

International Day of Friendship is July 30th

Our world faces many challenges, crises and forces of division — such as poverty, violence, and human rights abuses, among many others, which undermine peace, security, development and social harmony among the world's peoples.

To confront those crises and challenges, their root causes must be addressed by promoting and defending a shared spirit of human solidarity that takes many forms — the simplest of which is friendship.

Through friendship — by accumulating bonds of camaraderie and developing strong ties of trust — we can contribute to the fundamental shifts that are urgently needed to achieve lasting stability, weave a safety net that will protect us all, and generate passion for a better world where all are united for the greater good.

The International Day of Friendship was proclaimed in 2011 by the UN General Assembly with the idea that friendship between peoples, countries, cultures and individuals can inspire peace efforts and build bridges between communities.

The resolution places emphasis on involving young people, as future leaders, in community activities that include different cultures and promote international understanding and respect for diversity.

To mark the International Day of Friendship, the UN encourages governments, international organizations and civil society groups to hold events, activities and initiatives that contribute to the efforts of the international community towards promoting a dialogue among civilizations, solidarity, mutual understanding, and reconciliation.

The International Day of Friendship is an initiative that follows on the proposal made by UNESCO defining the Culture of Peace as a set of values, attitudes and behaviors that reject violence and endeavor to prevent conflicts by addressing their root causes with a view to solving problems.

It was then adopted by the UN General Assembly in 1997.
