Employee Spotlight: Debbie Bartlett

I started my career in the title and escrow business 38 years ago as a paralegal for an attorney-owned title company. I joined CSS in 2003 as manager of the Charlevoix office and expanded my oversight and duties to SVP of Title and Closing Operations as the company grew.

As a paralegal, I envisioned my ideal career to be working for a domestic relations attorney that specialized in divorce and child custody and I thought real estate was BORING. I instead found real estate to be very fulfilling and a career that allows me to still learn new things every day even after all these years.  I do not miss the drama of family law.

In training new hires, my famous line is – we can’t possibly write a manual covering all the numerous scenarios you will witness  and closing transactions you will be confronted with – so ask questions along the way – there will be many of them.

I am married to my husband, Steve, of 38 years. We have three grown children and I have been blessed with a beautiful granddaughter, Kennedy.

Career Lessons:

  1. Love what you do - otherwise you'll be no good at it.
  2. Never assume.
  3. Be kind to everyone - you don't know what is in their private suitcase and we all carry one.

What is the best piece of advice you've ever been given?

DO NOT BE AFRAID TO TRY. If you never try, you can't succeed. If you try and fail, you'll learn valuable lessons.

What would you do if you won the lottery?

I would build and furnish the house of my dreams using all of my own ideas for design and construction.
