Cyber-security Protection Checklist

A cyber-security breach could lead to serious financial and reputational damage for your customer. Please help ensure that your customers are protected against cyber fraud by taking the following actions:

1. Verbally confirm all funding or wire instructions received by email using only verified phone numbers on file

2. Verify immediately - Within 4-8 hours call CSS to confirm they received your wire. Be wary of last minute changes to funding or wire instructions, especially by email; changes are not common and may indicate fraud

3. Remember that lenders use secure email just like CSS; their emails should never come from Gmail, Yahoo, AOL, Hotmail, etc. Do not respond back to an email that seems suspicious

4. Do not click on links or open attachments from senders that you don’t recognize – if links look suspicious, you can hover over them to see the true URL before clicking on them

5. Be careful what you download and avoid websites that you don’t trust

6. Create a strong password, change it frequently, and never leave it lying around or share it with anyone else

7. Use a secure work-related email account if you have one rather than a personal email account that could be hacked

8. Always send emails or documents containing Non-Public Private Information, which includes many settlement documents, using encryption or using a secure portal such as the one that CSS provides

Don't serve as the middleman between the settlement agent and client - Have your client communicate directly with CSS when it comes to wire transfer instructions.
